Parts of an Auto Insurance Policy
Liability: Liability insurance is meant to cover property damage or injuries that you are responsible for causing. All licensed drivers are required to carry some form of Liability coverage. This coverage often consists of two parts: Bodily Injury Liability, and Property Damage. Your Liability Limits will define the maximum amount that your policy will pay for these damages in the event of an accident.
Medical Payments (Med Pay): Medical Payments are listed as a per-person limit, and are meant to cover minor medical bills for yourself or any passengers in the vehicle, regardless of whether the accident was your fault or the other driver's. Your Medical Payment coverage also follows you and any drivers listed on your policy if you're hurt as a passenger in another vehicle, and can even apply if you are struck by a vehicle as a pedestrian.
Physical Damage: Physical Damage coverage is meant to cover damages sustained to your automobile. This coverage is broken down into two parts: Comprehensive losses (sometimes called 'Other Than Collision'), and Collision losses. Generally a deductible applies to this coverage.
Endorsements: There are a number of optional coverages that can be added to increase the scope of your policy's coverage. These options can vary from company to company, which is why it's always a good idea to find an insurance carrier who offers the best options for your individual needs. These endorsements include things like:
- Loss of Use: (Rental Car Coverage): Can help cover the cost of a replacement/rental vehicle if your vehicle is disabled or in the shop due to a covered accident.
- Glass Deductible Waiver: This option will waive your Comprehensive deductible for claims involving damage to glass only.
- Towing/Roadside Assistance: Most insurance policies offer options to add coverage for Roadside Assistance, such as towing, lock-out, tire-change, battery jumpstarts, etc.
- OEM Parts: By contract, most auto insurance policies will permit the use of after-market parts when completing repairs to a damaged vehicle. The OEM Endorsement adds that the insurance company will only use OEM (Original Manufacturers' Parts) when possible.
- GAP / Loan-lease Payoff: Increase the coverage on your car to help cover any difference between its current value, and your outstanding loan.
